Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great
Pleasure to welcome you here, now, today.
I am the groom’s oldest friend and recall
Many occasions <when did we grow up?
It was all keepy-uppy, jumpers for
Goalposts, games in the park, or wherever.
Charging forwards with our troops, climbing trees.
Girls smelt funny and they played silly games-
And yet here we are now… When did we change?>
Raise your glasses to the bride and groom!

I can’t believe she said yes, she chose me.
Others can’t too, their drawn eyes betray them.
Yet her eyes glitter like stars on this day
She is a star! She rains soft, silver light,
Dimpling in the night sky, leading me home.
She has grace, poise, others sway to her steps
Swanlike she glides; little ripples follow
They dance yet for her pleasure, and I watch.
She is a vast sunset drawing us in
In reds, pinks, oranges, I come to her.
She is a rose, whose sweet scent surrounds me;
I long to breathe her in all of our days.

As you journey both in togetherness
May the skies watch your step, the winds catch you
May the gentle sun drench you in golden life
The breezes bend and bow for your will
May your thirst always be quenched, hunger fed –
Tender rains cleanse, renew, nourish your path.
May you know peace from long companionship,
The soft contours of the deep horizon.
May faith and truth bejewel your every step
And may the long path always sparkle hope.
Let your steps be enduring, the way smooth.
May the salutations of others know your joy,
May you sense stillness, time and peace alone.
May the road not limit or hold you back –
Fly through its barriers and surpass dreams.
Shield yourselves in honour, faith, and delight
Always with hearts full, whilst dusky skies flame.
I entrust my beautiful child to you.
