Match Report - 26th January
Menston 1 - 2 Chubb
A dirty match was had by all, and not just because of the weather!
Yes, the local residents of Menston saw yet another epic match between the two teams this last Saturday, and despite difficult, wet and slippery terrain, the lads played their hearts out to battle each other through to the finish and Ilkley took the winning goal to finish 1 ahead.
Dan, Michael, Tom and Jonny were missed this weekend - come on lads, we need you back!!!, but you would have been as proud as I at the galliant effort your team mates produced.
Not having a goalie presented us with our first problem and so Josh wrose to the challenge in the first half whilst our team played downhill to the Menston end. He came under repeated pressure and saved many, but one crack in our defence and Menston seized the opportunity, leaving Josh facing 2 eager strikers, and was ultimately nutmegged putting the teams equal at 1-1.
Sam had already put us ahead at 1-0 with some great ball control whilst running downhill, on a very slippery pitch, through the thick of the Menston pack, and shot a perfect goal into the bottom right hand corner.
Chris had a superb shot on goal, chipping it from quarter distance and floating it over the heads of the team and the goalie. It would have undoubtably been the goal of the season had the 20knot winds not carried it just that little bit too far onto the crossbar and into the hands of the goalie. Menston breathed a sigh of relief as the Chubbs regrouped to have another try.
As our newest addition to the team and only in his 4th Match, and whilst playing in 'defence'(!), Jacob, who's found some fantastic footballing feet since donning the famous Chubb kit, found himself in the mouth of Menston's goal with the ball at his feet. A fantastic run down the field, pushing through the Menston team like a ten-pin through skittles, he'd earned himself the right to take a shot, and to the cheers of the team and screams from the opponents, scored a fabulous goal to take Chubb 2 - 1 in the lead.
The first half had seen us running downhill, which meant the 2nd half had to be ran uphill, on tired legs. More importantly, Menston were now running down! A quick rearrangement of the team to bring Josh's legs out for the 2nd half and put Sam, with a great strength of attitude, in goal - supported by Seb, Luke and Jacob in defence, ensured our victory. Cameron and Josh kept working hard and pushing Menston back and came so close several times. Chris was his usual rocket self in the middle of the pitch - everywhere and highly reliable!
Despite the often dirty tactics, Menston played hard, and their goal keeper deserves a special mention as he clearly has a real tallent. Well done.
To our lads, we've started the season as we needed, 2 games, 2 wins, and for this week, Jacob takes the Man of the Match Trophy from Chris, and carries it proudly to our next match.
Well done everyone, keep up the good work. Oh, and Dan, Tom, Michael and Jonny - come back this week, please!!, I promise you'll get extra biscuits at half-time!
See you Saturday!
