The Cotswolds

Weekend away from London with Annette. How nice was that! Even though it pissed it down for half of Saturday. We left Friday in brilliant sunshine, and just drove and drove and drove. The rape fields are all in bloom, all brilliant yellow and smelling, well, not unpleasant, but decidedly odd. Made me sneeze, too.Me in the Cotswolds

Friday was the only properly nice day. Bummer, but it kinda didn't matter that it was a bit chilly, coz we weren't in London, and that makes all the difference.

Saturday, we had a time exploring the history of the region, in particular, Berkley Castle, and it's association with Edward ll.

Berkley Castle Edward was kept prisoner here for about 5 months by his wife, the Queen, who thought he wasn't fit to rule. She left him locked in a room over the castle's oubliette, which was kept filled with the rotting corpses of animals in the hope he would catch some dreadful disease and die a natural death...when that didn't happen, she let it be known that he'd probably be better off dead, and two of the castle guardstook it upon themselves to shove a red hot poker up his arse, thereby disposing of the King in a manner which allowed him to be laid out in state. I don't know what would be worse, dying of some horrible disease, or from having a red hot piece of iron shoved up you...

He was buried in Gloucester Cathedral, and you can see him there still, or at least, the top of his tomb, anyway.
