Mashup

Writing this from the BT Centre in London at the third Mashup event which is taking place. The first networking session has happened and now the session has started. Mind you we have lost about 70 people who have headed over to BT Tower instead!

Some photos are here.

So first on stage is Marc Canter for a 5 minute introduction!! Wow that was pretty close to 5 minutes

Stephen Stokols - BT Retail director of eChannels - is next on stage. Initially starting with an overview of the market to date. Now talking about Comms 2.0 and the future, another 2.0 thing, but going into to more detail about the opportunities in the fast moving comms market. BT Contact now introduced front end to many existing services such as Skype, Yahoo etc. Interesting screenshot of BT Contact which goes to Beta internally next week in BT. There's a lot in there, buddy list, presence, integration ith fixed lines. The UI is very interesting and Netvibes like.

Now a panel session taking place and first question is about advertising and why have. Always interesting when Marc Canter is on a panel. Where is the advertising goin, where the audience is today. Currently trying to upload a MMS but it is not working yet, dodgy signal. Lots of talk about subcription and free services, very interesting.

So who owns the data? So far no answer, the user should but be interesting to hear the answers.

Why will people pay, trust, openess, standards etc. Some of the answers given.

A video is below of some of the event.

Got to keep things simple for uptake at the end of the day.

Tony Fish is chairing the session extremely well. Asking and challenging the panel.

MTV UK

MTV UK last week launched an updated site which is built using Drupal 4.7.

Drupal Endorsement!

This is an excellent peice from IBM DeveloperWorks on why Drupal is so good. A great endorsement or my original decision to push this framework and one that I continue with. Apart from the development the gut feel that something is right comes with experience!

Social Networks as a Brand - Time for the T-Shirt??

An article about social networks being seen as a brnad, http://www.graphpaper.com/2006/06-06_social-networks-are-brands, maybe time for the etribes t-shirts!

Password protection

If you are looking for an all round solution for protecting your password then try this KeePass, http://keepass.sourceforge.net/, a very good peice of software which works very well. I store everything in there, but don't forget the information is only as safe as the password you put on the file.

Link Dump

Just a few things I have finally taken a closer look at recently;

Who Links To Me?

IceRocket

Plazes

Alexa - I know been there ages just never got into it

Scoble finally leaves Microsoft

Robert Scoble has finally left Microsoft, http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2006/07/01/day-of-exit-interviews/, will be interesting to see how he continues on the blog front how he is out of there.

Free Ski & Snowboard magazine

You can sign up for a new free Ski & Snowboard magazine from Base Camp Group here. Can't tell you if it is any good yet, but having spoken to Max there recently I think it will be a very good publication.

Google Checkout

Google is about to release it's online payment system, Google Checkout. It's the next step in their world domination plans. Seems to be US at the moment but others I am sure will follow on soon afterwards. CNet have done a review here.

People Aggregator hits the streets!

ok so there's been a load of hype over recent months, mostly from Marc Canter, about People Aggregator. Well today they finally went live with it. Over the past few weeks there seem to have been various hiccups as yo uwent to their site, but it is now there, PeopleAggregator. So having had a browse around, even signed up, it's not what I was expecting! First thing on landing on the homepage I was hit with a wealther of options to click on, way too many, where do I start?

One of his selling points is the way they claim to integrate with other systems, it's their Digital Lifestyle Aggregator. He'll get a load of registrations based purely on his reputation and the hype he has generated, but having looked more closely I was very disappointed with the offering. What's the differentiator? I would put there firmly on the integration / microformats / structured blogging etc. I see this more of a show peice for getting lots of bit corporate clients. From here couldn't tell why I would really want to sign up, what's the business model, what's different etc. For me it's aimed very much at the technical base audience.

Anyway it's one to watch for the future.
