Sloppy Kisses

Several times a day, when I am holding Oliver, I can't help but smother him with kisses. His cubby cheeks are overly kissable and mommy can't resist. Just this week instead of the usual smiles and giggles during this event, Oliver has started to kiss back. His kisses are a bit different of course, a wide open mouth comes crashing down on my face and moments later I am full of well...drool. But that doesn't matter, they are sloppy bit still the best thing on earth.

Rolling Over

This past Tuesday, October 28, Oliver rolled over for the first time! Lying on his stomach he rolled over to his back. We tried to get him to do it again, but apparently it was only a one show evening. But, the next two evenings he did give us two roller overs each evening! Then, on Thursday while Nan was watching him he rolled over from his back to his stomach. Quite a week!

Five Months and Flying

It seems so cliche' to say that time is flying, but that is really how it feels. In just a few days, our Oliver will be five months...one month short from a half a year old...WOW. This month has been a big one, full of learning and of course, growing. Oliver is now 19lbs, 8 oz. and quickly closing in on his cousin Henry in terms of size. Strangers we meet are constantly suprised to find out that our "little" one is only nearing his fifth month. The average guess puts Oliver at 8 or 9 months of age. More and more of his sweet personality emerge daily. He loves to "talk" and is now reaching for toys. He likes exploring the world with his mouth...tonight he was grabbing leaves left and right when we were taking his pictures outside. Not surprisingly, he has found the world of solid foods quite yummy...he gobbles up rice cereal, sweet potato and squash puree, and most recently baby oatmeal. He is fair in making sure that for every bite his mouth gets, his shirt and pants receive the same portion :-). Another discovery this month....his feet! Oliver is grabbing onto his toes and just last night actually got them to his mouth after several minutes of concentration. My favorite part of the day is coming home to him and his big uninhibited grin. We find ourselves wishing that our days with him would be longer, but with all these new things, Oliver surrenders to sleep around seven thirty every evening.

It's a bird, it's a plane...it's rice cereal!

The whole body smile

Greeting Oliver at the beginning of the day is a treat. Gone are the days of him crying to beckon us once he has woken. His tune has changed to coos and giggles. Often dad is sleeping when Oliver wakes up and I get to be the lucky one who greets him first thing in the morning. Weeks ago, he started smiling when our eyes met, but this week he's combined so many of the new things he has learned to do into one very special action...what I like to call the "whole body smile." It involves a toothless mouth with a wide open grin, sparkling eyes, arms wide out, an arching back and legs a kickin! I did my best to capture it with this video.

Having the girls over

We had the privilage of having a couple of Lisa's girlfriends and their husbands and daughters here this past weekend. In the picture below, we have (from left to right) Ella, Oliver, and Athena. Ella is about four months old and Athena is about nine months old. The ladies tolerated the photo shoot with grace and poise. Oliver, on the other hand, never really caught the same vibe. Nonetheless, we had fun getting the pictures and the evening as a whole was a lot of fun for both parents and kids.

Dog days of summer

It's the first week of August and we have realized we haven't posted any updates in awhile. What's been going on? Well, Oliver had his two month checkup last week where we found out that his weight is off the chart! He also got a couple of vaccinations, one in the thigh and one orally. The oral vaccination was for the rotavirus and it turned out that Oliver had a slight reaction to it. Cranky, a lot of spit up, extra sleep, did I mention cranky? The symptoms lasted the weekend before we were able to take Oliver into the doctor. As part of the visit the doctor weighed our boy and was surprised to see that despite his symptoms Oliver had still managed to pack on more weight since his visit five days earlier. That'a boy! Not to worry, Oliver was feeling better after about four days.

Coincidentally, that same weekend we decided it was time that Oliver should try sleeping in his own bedroom. On the first night he slept 8 hours solid, by far the longest period to date. Imagine our amazement! Since then, Oliver has chosen to continue sleeping in his own room. He really seems to like it in that he's averaging 8-1/2 hour sleep periods each night and he's even had a 10 hour sleep in there!

Lisa goes back to work in 1-1/2 weeks and to say she's not really looking forward to it would be an understatement. But, between Lisa's scheduling flexibility, the mother of a good friend of ours, and another good friend of ours we shouldn't need to place Oliver into a formal daycare at any point in the near future. We're very grateful to have the friends and resources to make this possible. To Oliver's bonus, when he's with the mother of a good friend of ours he will also be getting the opportunity to play with her gorgeous granddauther who is only six months older.

Well, that's our life in a nutshell right now. Oh, BTW, did anyone catch the Baby Borrowers show on NBC recently? Great show! It should be required viewing for every teenager!!

A seat with a view

We are discovering that one of Oliver's favorite things is to look outside. Oliver can be in total meltdown mode and we'll carry him out to the back porch, he starts looking out the windows, and within a matter of moments all is well in the world again. The picture below was taken this past weekend. For those that haven't been to our house, the back yard is fairly large with a number of trees and a nice perennial flower garden. At any given time you can see a number of birds, squirrels, and even some bunnies. It all makes for enough to capture the interest of an eight-week old for about 30-minute increments.

A day in the life...

I get home from work this evening and the house is quiet, baby and mommy are sleeping soundly upstairs. A rare event at 5PM! A chance for me to write a short blurb. Today was an amazing sleep day for Oliver! Last night was Oliver's first time for SLEEPING THRU THE NIGHT! He went to bed at about 10P, grumbled a little around 4AM but fell back asleep until 5AM. Lisa fed him and he went back to sleep until almost 730AM!! Lisa and I were both amazed, wondering to each other if we had both forgotten about Oliver getting up at some point during the night. Nope! One solid night of sleep!!
